How does New Leaf source its energy?

As a Retail Electricity Provider that sells exclusively green energy to its customer, all of our energy has been certified as 100% renewable by Green-e.org.

In terms of how we source this green energy, when a customer selects a green energy plan, New Leaf Energy purchases Renewable Energy Credits (RECs). These RECs are "tradable, non-tangible energy commodities in the United States that represent proof that 1 megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity was generated from an eligible renewable energy resource.

  • In states that have a REC program, a green energy provider (such as a wind farm) is credited with one REC for every 1,000 kWh or 1 MWh of electricity it produces.
  • The green energy is then fed into the electrical grid (by mandate), and the accompanying REC can then be sold on the open market.
  • Once in the grid, renewable energy is impossible to separate from the conventionally generated energy. This makes purchasing of a REC equal to purchasing a claim that the REC owner consumed energy from the renewable portion of the whole energy in the grid." [Source]

With New Leaf Energy, you can be assured that the green energy you have purchased has been generated from renewable energy sources and that your carbon footprint has been reduced. By choosing green energy for your home, you're telling the world that you want to be part of the solution regarding the pollution created by traditional energy sources like fossil fuels. When we increase the amount of green energy that customers are using, as well as increasing the number of customers using renewable energy in general, more green energy is then generated and made available. And this will benefit us today and future generations tomorrow.
